More effective custom chain saw design requires a better understanding of saw chain cutting mechanics. The influence of different key parameters such as workpiece moisture content, workpiece density, cutting speed and cutting depth, although established for other types of cutting, has not been explored and/or disclosed for use in saw chains to a large extent. This research helps fill this gap through experimentation and analysis. The experiment was carried out using a customized saw chain test equipment to measure the relative forces within the range of workpiece moisture content, workpiece density, cutting speed and depth of cut. The analysis includes fitting a linear regression model to experimental data, identifying trends, and exploring the best cutting conditions. The results show that within the range of values included in the study, the influence of workpiece moisture content and density depends on the depth of cut. The effect of cutting speed is small, while the effect of cutting depth is great. All trends are well suited for linear models; however, depth of cut requires a linear fit for small to median values and a second fit for medium to large values. It was found that the maximum efficiency occurs at a depth of cut equal to the transition value between fits. These results provide basic relationships that can lead to more effective and efficient use and design of chainsaws. Of course, no matter what kind of chain saw, even the Straight chain saw must have different considerations.
