The remastered launch of a game covers such a wide spectrum that it can move from looking like a simple re-release in one case to a borderline remake in another. This of course can dictate the possible reaction from fans and the broader community -- particularly when dealing with matches which are brought back from an era where displays were hefty, thick, and non-HD since the lace jeans and pants people were sporting at the moment.
Like an archaeological locate found in the dunes of an unkempt garage, or only a way to re-introduce a classic into a new audience, the concept of a remaster is never a bad thing in and of itself. In reality it's often cause for celebration. That sees the Y2K hit from Blizzard North find its way to modern consoles and PC hardware later this year.
When rumours started to pop up that Blizzard were actively working on or toying with the idea of bringing the iconic action-RPG -- many began to wonder exactly what that might look like. Would the 2D sprite-based visuals of Diablo II be given the 4K makeover ala StarCraft: Remastered, or could it be of a built-from-the-ground-up movie with new visuals and perhaps reimagined articles also. Questions that arose on account of this game's pedigree.
Describing Diablo II as iconic isn't only a random descriptor, it is a seminal release that not only helped define a genre but laid the groundwork for a future where loot, real-time activity, player progression, and objects like assembles and weapons and character classes became as ubiquitous as military shooters that concentrated on gruff soldiers with assault rifles. Probably.
In BlizzCon last month, when we got our first glimpse at Diablo II: Resurrected, the surprise came not from the statement itself but in the way in which the execution apparently exceeded all expectations. Impressive, contemporary 3D visuals which stay true to the appearance and feel of the first. Visuals that sit on top of those classic 2000-era pixels, presenting a radical visual makeover which averts what makes Diablo II, nicely, D2.
